This pigment is pre-dispersed in water for convenience in making your own watercolours, acrylics, tempera, and other water-based media. Its exceptional lightfastness, strong opacity, and smooth dispersion make it a versatile and reliable choice for various artistic techniques and mediums.
Use this dispersion to tint egg tempera, casein paint, milk paint, fresco plaster, distemper, glue tempera, gesso, and toned grounds. Add the binder of your choice dropwise to the dispersion and stir gently — avoid vigorous stirring, which can introduce air bubbles.
Delivers the same pigment used in dry powder and oil paint, pre-dispersed in water and ready to mix with any water-based painting medium. Shake well before use; some settling is normal in a dispersion with no added fillers. The dispersion is formulated to resist freezing and microbial spoilage in storage, using the stabilization approach appropriate to natural mineral pigments — different from the methods we use for modern synthetic pigments in the same dispersion range.
Why a dispersion instead of dry pigment? A pre-dispersed pigment eliminates the dust hazard of handling dry powder, removes the need for grinding or wetting-out, and provides consistent colour strength from bottle to bottle. The trade-off is cost per weight of pigment — dispersions are more concentrated and more expensive per gram than dry powder, but the convenience and safety benefits are substantial for painters working regularly in water-based media.
One significant advantage of Pyrrole Red over traditional pigments like Cadmium Red is its low toxicity. Toxicity levels in pigments are evaluated based on regulatory guidelines, such as those established by ASTM and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). These guidelines assess potential hazards, including heavy metal content, inhalation risks, and skin absorption.
Pyrrole Red has been extensively tested and classified as non-toxic, making it a safer alternative for artists while still maintaining high-performance characteristics. As an organic compound, it poses minimal health risks, contributing to its widespread adoption in educational settings and among health-conscious artists.
