Shungite is a naturally occurring carbon-rich rock found in Karelia, Russia. It consists of poorly ordered carbon intimately associated with inorganic mineral matter, principally silicate minerals. Its unusual carbon-mineral structure distinguishes it from graphite and from manufactured carbon blacks.

As a pigment, Shungite produces an intense black with a characteristically cool undertone. It has good hiding power and can be used alone or in mixtures with other pigments to produce deep, cool blacks and neutralize warmer colours.

Warning: Shungite is not considered a toxic pigment under normal conditions of use. As with all dry powdered pigments, however, avoid generating or inhaling airborne dust. Use appropriate handling procedures and personal protective equipment when working with dry pigment.
