Still Life Painting in Acrylic & Oil (4wk) May 28 - June 18 6:30-9:30pm

During this 4 week class, students will explore the art of painting from life. Each class, students will complete painting studies from elaborate and unique still life arrangements. The arrangement will change theme each class, with each weekly lesson touching upon different key techniques of still life painting: rendering accurate shapes; capturing realistic value; colour theory; and replicating texture through paint. In addition, students will learn about how to set-up their own successful still lives in their painting studio. Students may work in either oil or acrylic for this class. *Please see guidelines below for oils

Base Tuition: $210 Material Fee: $15

Material fee: $15 per person. This will be for perishables (flowers, fruit and other food) that will be purchased for each still-life set-up throughout the 4 week class.

Materials that students will bring
For this class, students can work with either oil or acrylic paint. Required materials for each medium are provided below:

If you will be Oil Painting:

If you will be Acrylic Painting: 

  • Mediums, Solvents and Driers are not permitted in the studio (ie no Odorless Mineral Spirits, Liquin etc)
  • Four (4) pre-gessoed Canvas boards, stretched canvases OR wood panels between 11” x 14” and 12” x 16”
  • Two (2) small canvases 8”x10” or smaller (for studies)
  • Linseed Oil
  • Acrylic paint (for underpainting) in Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna 
  • Brushes of various sizes
  • Brush cleaner (ex. linseed soap)
  • Paint Palette
  • Oil paints in the following colours*:
    • Titanium white
    • Raw Umber/Burnt Umber
    • Cadmium Red/Azo Red/Pyrrole Red
    • Alizarin Crimson
    • Yellow Ochre
    • Cadmium Yellow Light/Lemon Yellow
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Phthalo Blue 
  • Four (4) pre-gessoed Canvas boards, stretched canvases OR wood panels between 11” x 14” and 12” x 16”
  • Two (2) small canvases 8”x10” or smaller (for studies)
  • Brushes of various sizes
  • Paint Palette
  • Water container for cleaning brushes
  • Acrylic paints in the following colours*:
    • Titanium white
    • Raw Umber/ Burnt Umber
    • Cadmium Red/Azo Red/Pyrrole Red
    • Alizarin Crimson
    • Yellow Ochre
    • Cadmium Yellow Light/Lemon Yellow
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Phthalo Blue 
  • Optional: Golden Acrylic Retarder
  • Optional: Golden Regular gel gloss


*Colour names with the word “hue” can always be purchased as a cheaper alternative.

 

*This class requires 4 participants to run.
